Jerseys are a symbol of team pride and individual determination in sports as diverse as basketball, baseball, football, and hockey. Showing out your team's jersey, or even your own personalized number, can make any space feel more like home. Create a stylish display for your uniform using a shadowbox, curtain rod, or even just a hanger.
Put the jersey on a PVC pipe or curtain rod that's just a little bit longer than the jersey itself, and hang it up gently. Make a mark on the wall at each end of the rod, hang a hook at each one, and hang it up.
Pick a spot and put up a hook or use some command strips to hang the jersey there. If you have a wooden or felt hanger, use it to display the jersey proudly.
Use double-sided fabric tape or dressmaker pins to secure the jersey to the shadow box's backing board. Hang the frame by hammering a nail into the wall.
Making use of a Hanger
Pick up a wooden or felt hanger. While wire hangers are adequate for most garments, they might leave permanent dents in more delicate items like your jersey if you use them. A hanger made of durable, smooth wood or felt that matches your jersey or the colors of your team is a good choice.
Find a good spot to hang your jersey. Make a little pencil mark on the wall at the desired location for the hanger's hook. Make sure the jersey has plenty of room to hang without touching anything. If you want to keep the jersey in pristine condition, you should not display it in a sunny or humid environment or near a window.
Put up a command hook or strip on the wall to hold tiny items. Make sure there isn't any litter or dirt over your highlighted location. Put a small nail or hook into the wall where you want to make changes. If you need to hang something on an unchangeable wall, simply stick a command strip to the wall and line up the hook with the pencil mark.
Show off that jersey. Hang your jersey from a nail or hook by sliding the hanger inside the garment. Adding a picture of yourself in uniform, your favorite athlete, or a piece of equipment would be great additions to your display.
Mini Glue Dots or other adhesives can help keep your jersey in place if it has a tendency to slip.
Pole-Based Exhibit
A skinny curtain pole or PVC pipe will do. Curtain poles allow for flexibility in positioning, while tubes may create a more uniform and tidy appearance when mounted to the wall. Look for poles that have your team's colors painted on them.
How wide is your jersey? Take the measurement from sleeve to sleeve. Grab your jersey by the sleeves and pull them tight until you can draw a straight line from the shoulder to the collar. Get out your ruler and measure how long this line actually is.
Your pole needs to be adjusted such that it protrudes beyond the jersey by a small amount. If you're going to use a curtain pole, make sure it's slightly wider than the jersey. To accomplish the same task with a PVC tube, use a plastic pipe cutter. The pole needs to be a little bit longer than the jersey so that the ends can hang from hooks without snagging.
Find and mark the wall corners where the pole will be placed. Mark the middle of the neckline on the jersey with a pencil. Then, half the pole's length will do. Mark both the left and right ends of this distance after measuring it with a metal ruler from the middle. Hold your pole up to a wall to make sure the ends are even.
Put your ruler up against the wall in such a way that its intersection with both of your marks is directly above them. The straightness of the ruler can then be checked with a level.
Put hooks where they belong. If your curtain pole came with particular hardware for mounting to the wall, be sure to follow the included instructions for doing so. Nail hooks, screw hooks, or a thick command strip can be used in place of the ones that weren't included or with a PVC tube. Make sure the hooks can hold the pole's weight and are big enough to fit the pole.
Hang the jersey by threading a rod through it. To get your pole through the jersey, start at one sleeve and work your way to the other. If the shirt keeps falling down, secure it with a few pieces of tape or Glue Dots. Attach the hooks or other hanging hardware to the pole's ends.
Placing Your Jersey on Display
Get a big shadow box to show your stuff off. Find a small shadow box or another container that can accommodate your jersey and any other memorabilia you plan to frame with it. Choose border colors that either go well with the jersey or the space where it will be displayed.
If you plan on folding the shirt so that only the number is visible, a square shadow box would work best.
If you want to show off the entire jersey, go for a large, rectangular shadow box.
Take off the backing board from the shadow box. The mounting board included with most store-bought shadow boxes is often composed of cork or very thin wood. Just like the backing from a picture frame, you can take this off and set it down flat.
Mounting boards might look better if they are covered with cloth or paper that complements or stands in contrast to the jersey's colors.
You can attach your jersey to the board with double-sided fabric adhesive. You'll use the same fundamental procedure to fasten your jersey to the board whether you fold it into a square or present the entire side. You can tape the jersey's body to the board using strips of double-sided fabric tape. Make sure the garment is correctly fastened by pressing down firmly on the board.
Use safety pins or dressmaker pins to secure any sagging material. Pin any sagging areas of the jersey with little dressmaker's pins. Aim for places like the insides of the sleeves and shoulders that won't be on view. Use tape to cover up any prongs that might be showing.
If you'd like, you can also attach other decorations to the board. If you have room, you might put some relevant objects in the shadow box. The jersey's closures also work for attaching other small, lightweight items. Use Velcro straps or twine to secure larger, heavier items together. The base of the shadow box can be used to support items in some cases
Add game essentials like gloves, balls, and pucks to your own jersey design.
Consider including mementos like trading cards or flags of the team in your fan jerseys.
Set up a wall-mounted nail or hook. Find out what kind of mount your mounting board uses by looking at the back of it. This is typically a standard nail mount. Locate the desired spot on a wall that can be altered and insert a nail or other mounting device there. Use a command strip instead of trying to modify the wall.
Use a strong nail or hook to hold the frame together for heavy boxes.
Put your jersey back on the wall after reaffixed the mounting board. Reconnect the mounting board to the shadow box once you have finished your arrangement. Take care not to knock anything over or move anything inside. When you're done, you can hang the frame and admire your work.
